Günther studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There his teacher was Olof Jernberg. In Düsseldorf, where he became a member of the Malkasten art association, he established himself as a sea painter. He made numerous trips around Europe, from 1890 to the Netherlands, as well as to Egypt and other African countries.
