Additional Description

Roman BRATKOWSKI

1869-1954

He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków under Feliks Szynalewski, Ignacy Jabłoński and Władysław Łuszczkiewicz (in the years 1888-1890). He continued his painting studies in Vienna. In the years 1894-1896 he studied at the private painting school of Anton Ažbé in Munich, where he returned many times. From 1891, the artist regularly participated in exhibitions at the TZSP in Warsaw and at the TPSP in Kraków and Lviv. From 1903 he collaborated with Stanisław Batowski in the painting school he ran in Lviv. Bratkowski painted mainly landscapes, dominated by sea views and nocturnes. The artist's paintings are in the collections of museums in Kraków, Warsaw and Tarnów as well as in private collections. They were perfectly composed and finished, imbued with a mood of subtle melancholy. They were distinguished by the ability to observe and synthesize natural phenomena, especially emphasizing the contrast of movement and peace in the landscape.
